Kerala Water Authority (KWA) consumers in the district can self-read meters and calculate and pay bills using a mobile application starting from November 1.

As part of the drive to go digital, KWA has developed two mobile applications with the help of Kerala Development Innovation and Strategic Council (K-DISC). The Self Meter Reader App is for consumers to self-read meters, calculate bills and pay online and the Meter Reader App was developed to aid meter readers to calculate bills instantly.

The state-wide project is being implemented in the state capital in the first phase.

Theconsumers and meter readers at Palayam section of KWA have been given training on the usage of the applications and the trial run is on.

Both the applications are available on Google Playstore. After downloading, consumers can register themselves by entering the consumer ID and other basic details to activate the application.

The consumers can enter the meter readings in the application to get instant bills. Once the reading is entered, the application will ask for a live picture of the geo-tagged meter and this is intended to avoid frauds. The page will automatically lead to bill paying options and consumers can either exit or continue paying the bill using online payment methods. Payments can also be made using Google-pay, Phone-pay and all other digital payment mechanisms. The meter reader app is purely for meter readers as the existing system is time consuming and laborious.

“At present, meter readers visit houses and write down the reading in a document sheet. Later, all the readings are uploaded on the server after reaching the office. Once the reading is entered, bills will be generated online, and consumers can pay it either online or through the counter. However, the new system enables meter readers to record the readings directly from the App and the bill will be sent to the mobile of consumers right away,” said KWA executive engineer Santhi S.

The cash-strapped KWA hopes to boost revenue-generation with the new initiative. Timely payments of water bills can be ensured using the App and the KWA authorities hope to cut over a hundred temporary staff currently engaged in meter reading and collecting bill payments at cash counters. As many as 55 staff are working at the 23 cash counters in the district. There are also a total of 53 meter readers and 18 meter inspectors.

Kerala Water Authority built the K Self app as a Free app. This SERVICE is provided by Kerala Water Authority at no cost and is intended for use as is.

The K Self Application was developed to equip KWA consumers to generate their own bills and make instant online bill payments. This is a digital platform that makes consumers manage KWA bills without depending on the meter readers with the following features:


-Registration using consumer ID

-Generate bill by capturing the photo of meter, including the GPS coordinates

-Consumers can download bill and also pay via UPI

-Consumers will receive the bill generation SMS, make payments via UPI, and will receive a payment confirmation by SMS

-Consumers can view the last 6 months' bills and receipts
